While there have been a number of Legendary Pokémon to this point, Mewtwo was the ultimate original Legendary. Sure, the original 151 set had Zapdos, Moltres, Articuno, Mew, and some pseudo-legendary Pokémon such as Dragonite. None others though were designated as the strongest Pokémon like Mewtwo.
With that kind of hype, it’s no surprise that Mewtwo has some incredibly popular and expensive Pokémon cards following its legend. And that’s exactly what we are going to cover here today.
Take note that this list will be sorted by average raw value. I will include PSA 10 values as well, but will keep the list based on raw value as it is a more “real” value in case you find one of these lying around. Some of these cards also have several variants (Japanese, 1st Edition, Promo, etc) that I will separate and include on the list.
*Please note that this article was published on 1/7/2024 and prices for some of these cards may have fluctuated since then.*
Without further ado then, let’s check out the 20 most expensive Mewtwo Pokémon cards!
#20 – Mewtwo Expedition #20
Raw: ~$90 | PSA 10: $2,800
Coming in at #20 is actually the #20 Holo Mewtwo from the Expedition set. While this card still has a respectable raw value, its PSA 10 value is astonishingly high at nearly $3,000! The cards from the “E-Reader” Pokémon card sets actually had a scanning function, which made most of them heavily played with. Because of that, these cards are incredibly hard to find in pristine condition.
In case you were curious of the actual number, only 59 PSA 10’s are in existence as of 1/1/2025. In case you weren’t sure, that is a very low PSA 10 population for any card.
If you like Mewtwo and want to add more to your collection, there is also a reverse holo version of this card that sells for about $50!
#19 – Japanese 1st Edition Mewtwo #118
Raw: ~$120 | PSA 10: $350
The 19th most expensive Mewtwo card is actually the Japanese brother of the Expedition Mewtwo above. This Mewtwo does have a higher raw value than its English counterpart, but has a significantly lower PSA 10 value.
The English cards were played with like the Japanese cards, but the English cards were not nearly as resilient and high quality, even straight out of the pack. The Japanese version of the cards then have 661 PSA 10 versions of this card vs the 59 of the English version above.
Unfortunately though, the Japanese version does not also have a reverse holo version.
#18 – Japanese 20th Anniversary Mewtwo EX #95
Raw: ~$120 | PSA 10: ~$400
The Japanese 20th Anniversary Mewtwo EX was a specialty released card in Japan to commemorate, wait for it, Pokémon’s 20th anniversary. Big shocker I know.
This card was released as a Japanese equivalent to the English XY Evolutions set, so there is a cheaper English version if you are interested. Because of its difficulty to get a hold of though, this card has a respectable value and has remained so since its release in September of 2016.
#17 – Japanese Mewtwo Game Boy #150
Raw: ~$125 | PSA 10: ~$450
The Japanese Game Boy Mewtwo is a pretty cool and unique one on this list. This Mewtwo could only be earned through a mail-in campaign after one completed an in-game achievement in Pokémon Card GB.
And while it’s not absurdly expensive like others on this list, it does have a great background and an incredibly unique artwork. If you are a Mewtwo fan, it seems like this should absolutely be one you pick up.
#16 – Japanese Mewtwo Gold Star #2
Raw: ~$130 | PSA 10: ~$1,700
Coming in at #16 is the Japanese Gold Star Mewtwo. If you don’t know about Gold Star Pokémon cards, they are now some of the most valuable and sought after Pokémon cards there are. Fortunately, Mewtwo got to be one of these iconic cards.
While not all Gold Star Pokémon cards are holo, the Japanese Mewtwo does have an incredible purple space like holo sheen. This background also shows off the out of the frame Mewtwo in all of its glory.
For reference on the pricey PSA 10 number, there are about 300 PSA 10’s in existence for this card.
#15 – Rocket’s Mewtwo [Winner] #8
Raw: ~$140 | PSA 10: ~$1,400
The Rocket’s Mewtwo Winner card is an interesting one. It could only be attained through tournament play of the Pokémon Trading Card Game with the “winner” stamp meaning that the receiver of the card was a top-performing player. There were 16 “Best Of” promo cards released in total and the Rocket’s Mewtwo Winner is the most valuable of them all.
This Best Of Rocket’s Mewtwo has the same art as the original Rocket’s Mewtwo but makes it reverse holo rather than the original holographic pattern of the original. This gives the card an incredible look but also makes it much harder to grade in a PSA 10.
If you’re a Mewtwo lover, this absolutely should be a card you have in your collection.
#14 – Mewtwo GX #78
Raw: ~$145 | PSA 10: ~$1,000
Despite the Mewtwo GX from the Shining Legends set being released in 2017, it quickly became an incredibly sought after card in all of the Sun & Moon series. Not only did the card have an incredibly tough pull rate, but it also was great in competitive TCG play.
Regardless if you play the Pokemon Trading Card Game or just like to collect, this Mewtwo is absolutely one that is worth picking up!
#13 – Japanese No Rarity Mewtwo #150
Raw: ~$155 | PSA 10: ~$10,000
The “Japanese Expansion Pack” Mewtwo was the Japanese equivalent of the English Base set. While the regular Japanese Mewtwo runs for only about $15, the “No Rarity” version runs for exponentially more.
That’s because the “No Rarity” version of the Japanese Expansion pack is just like the 1st Edition cards from the English Base Set cards. If the Japanese card has no rarity, it means it was part of the first release ever of these cards. Just like their English counterpart, there was far less of them released and they are therefore much harder to come across.
Despite falling to #13 on this list for raw values, it has a monster PSA 10 value of over $10,000. It’s last sold was in March of 2021 (at the height of Pokémon card values) at a massive $15,750! And because there are only 10 PSA 10 Japanese No Rarity Mewtwo cards, the true value is up in the air.
May be worth digging in your parents basement to see if you happened to snag one of these when you were a kid.
#12 – Japanese Mewtwo & Mew Tag Team GX #98
Raw: ~$160 | PSA 10: ~$770
Coming in at #12 is the only Mewtwo on this list that has to share space with another Pokémon. And perhaps it’s no surprise that it belongs to the Team Up set. In case you weren’t aware, the Team Up set is actually one of the most valuable Pokémon card sets ever released.
While Mew is busy being cute in the background, Mewtwo seems to be a grumpy older sibling irritated by its younger siblings antics. An image we most certainly have not yet seen of Mewtwo…
While the English version of this card isn’t quite as expensive as its Japanese counterpart, both are highly sought after and worth adding to any Mewtwo collection.
#11 – Mewtwo Reverse Holo #29
Raw: ~$190 | PSA 10: ~$3,100
If you haven’t heard of the Legendary Collection set, you are in for a treat. The Reverse Holo Mewtwo from the aforementioned set has one of the best holo patterns of any set ever. And to have Mewtwo as the centerpiece makes it all the better.
The reason for the sizeable PSA 10 price tag is that these Legendary Collection cards were incredibly hard to grade well. Their holo pattern themselves did not always print well and can be scratched easily. Because of that, there are only 51 of these cards in PSA 10 as of writing this article.
If you like the art but the cost is a little too high, fear not. There is a non-holo version of this Mewtwo from the Legendary collection as well as a Black Star Promo with the same art for much less than the above.
And if you have it in your collection already? Then I am simultaneously happy for you and jealous of you.
#10 – 1st Edition Rocket’s Mewtwo #14
Raw: ~$190 | PSA 10: ~$1,500
Like the “Best Of” Promo Mewtwo above? Feast your eyes on the original. The 1st Edition Rocket’s Mewtwo. Coming in at a respectable #10 most expensive, the Gym Challenge Mewtwo is both rare and incredibly popular in the Gym series sets.
As you may have imagined, there is a non 1st Edition for quite a bit cheaper in case this one is out of your price range. It is a beautiful card regardless of which one you own.
#9 – Japanese Mewtwo GX #82
Raw: ~$225 | PSA 10: ~$670
We’ve had a few English and Japanese versions of Mewtwo cards, and the Japanese Mewtwo GX happened to also want to join the party.
If you look above at the English version at #14, you will find that its raw value is lower but that its PSA 10 value is higher than the Japanese version here. The Japanese set was harder to find but English tends to not print as well. That being said, the Japanese PSA 10 price seems to be increasing as of late. Might be worth picking up before it gets too high!
#8 – Japanese Mewtwo GX #80
Raw: ~$225 | PSA 10: ~$850
Coming in at #8 is the Japanese Mewtwo GX which is actually from the same set as the Mewtwo GX #82 above. While the English version is substantially cheaper, the Japanese Mewtwo GX is the most expensive card in the Shining Legends set.
While everyone likes a good rainbow Pokémon card, this same Mewtwo art has a few other English options too. There is a Shiny Vault Mewtwo and an English and Japanese Full art version also! However you like your Mewtwo, there is a number of styles and prices of this one!
#7 – Shining Mewtwo #109
Raw: ~$250 | PSA 10: ~$1,500
Coming in at #7 is the Shining Mewtwo from the Neo Destiny set. The Neo Destiny set was the first Pokémon card set to switch up the holo and put it on the Pokémon itself rather than just the background.
While Charizard sits atop the most expensive in the set, the Shining Mewtwo falls closely behind it as the next most expensive. And if there were ever a Pokémon to show off this holo, it’s most definitely Mewtwo.
#6 – Mewtwo Prerelease Staff #51
Raw: ~$250 | PSA 10: $?
The Mewtwo Prerelease Staff might not be very known to a lot of you. That’s because this particular Mewtwo was only given out to staff members who helped with pre-release events. Therefore, a lot of these cards fell to shop owners and were incredibly limited in quantity.
To give you an idea of how rare they are, there are only 5 of these cards in PSA 10 with none registered as sold. The PSA 10 price then is still up in the air.
Once again, there are alternative options to get a very similar card to this one without the huge price tag. The Prerelease (non staff) version of this card runs for about $100. If that’s still too pricey, you can get the standard Evolutions Mewtwo for just a couple of dollars.
#5 – Rocket’s Mewtwo EX #99
Raw: ~$250 | PSA 10: ~$2,000
Coming in at #5 is the Rocket’s Mewtwo EX from the Team Rocket Returns set. Interestingly, this is the only Mewtwo from the EX Series in this entire list.
The EX series was the first set that changed the borders from yellow to silver. They also added a unique holo finish that hadn’t been done prior to this series. This makes this Mewtwo a bit of a standout among the rest in this list.
While this set isn’t quite as popular as some of the E-reader or Original sets, this Mewtwo and the Team Rocket Returns set will continue to be highly collectible in the coming years.
#4 – 1st Edition Shadowless Base Set Mewtwo #10
Raw: ~$350 | PSA 10: ~$8,500
The #4 most expensive Mewtwo on the list is the first English Mewtwo Pokemon card to ever be released (the #13 Japanese Mewtwo on this list is the first ever). With only 82 PSA 10’s in existence, this card commands an impressive PSA 10 number.
The case could (and probably should) be made that this is the most iconic Mewtwo ever. Despite only being #4 on this list, it is the true English original and should be a major chase for any Mewtwo lover.
If you love the card but not the price, there are fortunately some cheaper alternatives with a slightly lower price available. The Shadowless Mewtwo is the closest to the 1st Edition in color, look and otherwise and is only about $40. The original Base Set Mewtwo doesn’t quite have the same coloring but can get you a very similar card for around $15.
#3 – Mewtwo Gold Star #103
Raw: ~$400 | PSA 10: ~$4,125
Coming in at #3 is the English Gold Star Mewtwo from the Holon Phantoms set. Much like its Japanese counterpart (#16 on the list), it has a space-like holo background and shows a “shiny” version of Mewtwo that has a slightly different color than the original.
While this is an older card, it was one of the earlier cards that showed the Pokémon going outside of the edges of the border, which gives this a great 3D perspective.
Let’s be real though, regardless of your thoughts on the art, this card holds an impressive $400 average raw value and a $4,100 PSA 10 price tag. That’s because this card only has 123 PSA 10s in existence.
#2 – Japanese Shining Mewtwo #150
Raw: ~$470 | PSA 10: ~$9,100
Coming in at the #2 most expensive Mewtwo is the Japanese Shining Mewtwo. Similar to its English version at #7, the Japanese Shining Mewtwo also shows the holo on the Mewtwo itself rather than the background. This gives Mewtwo an “aura” that best suits Mewtwo over any other Pokémon.
Outside of the art though this Japanese set was only released in 1st Edition and was incredibly rare and tough to pull. As of writing this article, the Japanese Shining Mewtwo has only 74 PSA 10’s. Its last sold was more than a year and a half ago at $9,100.
Let’s get to our #1 spot.
#1 – 1st Edition Shining Mewtwo #109
Raw: ~$700 | PSA 10: ~$3,400
The most expensive raw Mewtwo Pokémon card is none other than the 1st Edition Shining Mewtwo #109 from the Neo Destiny set. Averaging an incredibly impressive $700, this card is only second in the entire set to the 1st Edition Shining Charizard.
Despite having a lower PSA 10 value than its Japanese counterpart above, the raw value trounces everything on this list by a pretty substantial amount. Regardless of which you prefer, there are no wrong answers here.
If you are trying to pick this card up, be careful out there as this card does have fake versions.
Conclusion
How can you not like Mewtwo? It’s one of the original 151 Pokémon and has stayed one of the strongest and most interesting through 9 entire generations of Pokémon. Because of that, Mewtwo has some incredibly interesting, diverse, and valuable Pokémon cards in the market.
