The Base Set Pokémon cards. The first English set ever released in 1999. Despite being around for over 25 years, they are still one of the most popular and sought after sets for collectors.
Regardless if you like modern or vintage cards, it’s highly likely you still have an appreciation for these. So why not spend some time checking out all 102 of the original English Pokémon cards?
What’s Included In This List
Included are pictures of all 3 base set cards which include 1st Edition Shadowless (actual first release and most expensive by a lot), Shadowless (printed after 1st Edition), and Unlimited (the most common and cheapest of the three). You’ll notice that the coloring for the Shadowless and 1st Edition cards are identical where the Unlimited cards have a slightly different coloring.
Lookalike Sets + Other Collectibles
Its worth noting that there is a 4th print Base Set which I did not include here as it is not as recognized or known. That said, they are valued by some collectors and are rarer than the standard Unlimited set. 4th Print Base Set cards have a slightly different shading and are noticed mainly by having a 1999-2000 copyright vs just a 1999 on the bottom of the card.
The other two sets with similar art that could be confused with the Base Set collection are Base Set 2 and Legendary Collection. If you find a card with the same art as the ones below but a “2” on the right side it is from Base Set 2. If it has a symbol that looks like a medal, then it is from Legendary collection. I have included an example Alakazam from the other two sets below as examples.
One last note. If you click any of the links and purchase a card through them, it does help support the website so it is much appreciated! Please note though that the shadowless links will show a 1st Edition in the picture that pulls up, but will not be 1st Edition unless filtered as such. You can see that filter is applied with the 1st Edition Shadowless links.

Base Set Trainer + Energy Card List
For the base set Pokémon trainer and energy cards, the shadowless and 1st Edition are slightly different than the Pokémon. The main way to tell the difference between shadowless and Unlimited for Base Set Trainer and energy cards is the years at the bottom.
Shadowless trainer cards will have the year 1995, 96, 97, 98, 99, while Unlimited will not have a “99” year. The coloring is also slightly different, but that isn’t as surefire of a way to tell.
For 1st Edition Shadowless Trainer cards, the 1st Edition stamp will be along the bottom edge rather than on the center left like the Pokémon cards above. 1st Edition Shadowless Energy cards will have the 1st Edition stamp in the top right corner.
